{"id":120,"date":"2009-11-10T19:30:25","date_gmt":"2009-11-10T23:30:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/45.79.82.122\/blogs\/natterings\/?p=120"},"modified":"2013-10-07T00:19:17","modified_gmt":"2013-10-07T04:19:17","slug":"hit-me-again","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/natterings.com\/?p=120","title":{"rendered":"Hit me again!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I play a lot of 4th Edition D&amp;D, and while I don&#8217;t haunt boards or rp sites at all, I do think about all the topics my very forum-happy DM of a boyfriend brings up.\u00a0 Lately, he&#8217;s been doing a lot of 4E defense &#8211; saying yes, you can roleplay using that ruleset, yes, you can have involved stories, no, it&#8217;s not &#8220;just like an MMO&#8221; because someone might say &#8220;tank&#8221; instead of &#8220;defender&#8221; at the table once in a while.\u00a0 I&#8217;m paraphrasing here, and maybe making some stuff up.<\/p>\n<p>It took me a few sessions in one of my ongoing games to realize how I had to approach roleplay in 4E to make it worthwhile.\u00a0 This is heavily informed by the aforementioned boyfriend&#8217;s brilliant <a href=\"http:\/\/clawclawpeck.wordpress.com\/2009\/07\/12\/roleplaying-with-miniatures\/\">&#8220;Roleplaying with Miniatures&#8221;<\/a> article, especially this:\u00a0 &#8220;Step four: make your character do whatever your character would do. Fuck tactics.&#8221;\u00a0 Provocative, yes.\u00a0 Something to discuss with your other players so you don&#8217;t end up with two people in Super ZOMG Tactics Mode and two others running around hitting evil statues on the nose because their characters are &#8220;fun.&#8221;\u00a0 There&#8217;s a balance to be struck.<\/p>\n<p>I started thinking about mechanical ways to make this part of the game itself, as opposed to a potential social contract that may not work in play.\u00a0 What I came up with, for lack of a better term, is &#8220;chosen limitations.&#8221;\u00a0 Detriments, challenges, etc.\u00a0 Everyone in the party chooses something &#8211; some facet of <em>tactical play &#8211; <\/em>to be a limitation in combat.<\/p>\n<p>Choose it right at the beginning.\u00a0 Make it an explicit part of character creation.\u00a0 Have a pretty strong vision of what these limitations might be.\u00a0 You don&#8217;t want it to be like a Secret Santa exchange at the office, where everyone spends $5 and That One Guy spends $30.\u00a0 In the same vein, you don&#8217;t want lots of little limitations and then the guy who says &#8220;I wear an eyepatch on my left eye, so if a bad guy hits me from the left, I&#8217;m automatically dazed!&#8221;\u00a0 Too big.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve only used this in practice once, and I don&#8217;t even know if it was noticeable to the other players.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a 4E game in a rich, fascinating setting (a shout out to <a href=\"http:\/\/transit.legendary.org\/index.php\/Main_Page\">Metrocalypse<\/a> here), and our characters are folks who were in Oxford, England in 1605 who woke up to a radically changed world.\u00a0 My character is a fairly young woman who went from her father&#8217;s care to her husband&#8217;s.\u00a0 She&#8217;s all of 19, the world is a wreck, and now she&#8217;s fighting giant ants and explaining religion to bullywugs.\u00a0 Neat rp!\u00a0 But how to reflect that <em>in combat<\/em> to keep my interest going?\u00a0 I decided:\u00a0 she will cling to the strong men in her company, as she&#8217;s always clung to father and husband.\u00a0 Cecily will never be further than two squares away from one of the male characters.\u00a0 Ever.\u00a0 If pushed to a square further away, her first action will be to return to that range.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s just a tiny little consideration that I can set alongside all the other tactical decisions I make in play, but this one ties into who she is as character, not who she is as class.\u00a0 And how about a halfling who can&#8217;t swim?\u00a0 A half-elf who was a captive as a youth, and who will automatically react violently if shoved into small spaces?\u00a0 A character who has fallen in love with another character, and will always see to that character&#8217;s health before anything else?\u00a0 Make it a tactical challenge, decided upon with the DM.\u00a0 Choose to share it with the other players, or keep it a cool secret to figure out in play.<\/p>\n<p>Really, this is what I love about 4E.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t see it as limiting; I see it as an incredibly easy and expansive framework.\u00a0 And making your character&#8217;s life harder is fun!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I play a lot of 4th Edition D&amp;D, and while I don&#8217;t haunt boards or rp sites at all, I do think about all the topics my very forum-happy DM of a boyfriend brings up.\u00a0 Lately, he&#8217;s been doing a lot of 4E defense &#8211; saying yes, you can roleplay using that ruleset, yes, you [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[10],"tags":[49,35],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/natterings.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/120"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/natterings.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/natterings.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/natterings.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/natterings.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=120"}],"version-history":[{"count":4,"href":"https:\/\/natterings.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/120\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":234,"href":"https:\/\/natterings.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/120\/revisions\/234"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/natterings.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=120"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/natterings.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=120"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/natterings.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=120"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
